Anyone using Spot Colors?

Post by Rodi » Sun Jan 17, 2010 8:25 pm

Hi,
just wondering about Spot Colors, does anyone use them and how do you like or not like them?

YES.

They work great.
Think like a screen printer pulling a squeegee on a t-shirt and you get the idea.

When I have a decal sticker with limited colors I go SPOT.
Especially if the colors can be found on the SUMMA color chart.

IE #1: Gadsden flag stickers.
Colors: Black snake with white fill on yellow background.

(Some art has green grass but we don't do the green)
We use 2 SUMMA ribbons: Golden Yellow & Black.
That's it!
Don't forget to change OPTI-TRACK (OPUS) from CYAN to BLACK.

If I used CMY, there would be waste and the yellow, if not 100% process yellow, would have magenta dots to make up for the different shade of yellow needed. Forget that.

IE #2: Service Star decals (& USA flag stickers, too!):
Colors: Intense Red and Spot Blue.

CMY would give me a blended red (magenta and black) with noticeable dots. I'd have to print at Hi-Res to get the color right. Forget that. Just use the spot color ribbons.
Don't forget to change OPTI-TRACK (OPUS) from CYAN to BLUE.
(Note: on the DC3, RED cannot be used for Optical Tracking System)

Note that when using spot color ribbons, there is 100% color saturation with no dots! The color is solid and true. Spot ribbons work best when using colors like TEAL or any HOT colors, gold foils (mirror colors) which cannot be easily blended in CMY.

IE #3: "Keep Christ In Christmas"
KeepChrist prints.jpg
KeepChrist prints.jpg (52.54 KiB) Viewed 3616 times
Colors: Spot Green, Spot Bright Blue, Spot Intense Red and Mirror Gold.

Check out U-HAUL trucks and trailers. When I'm on the road my wife laughs because I'm always identifying the spot ribbons used in the advertising art on their vehicles. They're done on SUMMA DC's! Pretty nifty, eh?

If I were you, I'd get a handful of spots to try out.
MIRROR GOLD is a MUST! We use it to highlight many of our decals.

Get SUMMA to send you their color chart.
There is one free in their brochure.
They also have a spiral bound book, cheap enough.

If you need to see what spot colors look like in CMY,
I suggest printing out a Pantone Color Chart.

We made one up in Freehand and saved it as an Adobe Illustrator EPS.
If you need one, let me know.
Maybe Muts can make it available for download on this forum.

later,

Tony :-)

Tony,
Nice examples. I know all about spot colors! I just heard someone who said that spots weren't so good on the DC 3/4, so I came to the source and asked.

I love spot colors.

Great information.
